What counts as native americans?

My grandmother is native peruvian(quechua incan) and the aztecs or the cree of canada. Do those count as native americans. Wen I tell ppl I have native blood they ask me what kind and I say incan then they say oh that's not native american. Is native american only those who are native to the unitied states?
